Medical detox for alcohol and drugs in Arkalyk

In short

Detox for alcoholism and drug addiction is the first stage of addiction treatment, during which use of the psychoactive substance is stopped under a doctor's supervision, withdrawal symptoms are controlled and the body's disrupted functions are restored. It includes an assessment, IV and medication therapy, and monitoring. Detox in Arkalyk is carried out at home or in an inpatient unit, anonymously, usually over 3–10 days.

What you should know

In addiction medicine, the term “detox” means the medically supervised withdrawal of a substance on which a person has become physically dependent. The WHO regards it as a necessary but not sufficient stage of treatment: detox eliminates the acute symptoms of withdrawal and lowers the risk of complications, but on its own it does nothing about the causes of the dependence. That is why, in clinical practice, it is always planned together with follow-up treatment.

A detox program in Arkalyk at Narcology 24 is tailored to each patient: it takes into account the substance (alcohol, opioids, stimulants, sedatives or a combination), how long it has been used, the condition of the liver, heart and kidneys, and mental health. The doctor decides on the format — outpatient with home visits or inpatient — and explains each stage to the patient. Treatment is voluntary, based on informed consent, and involves no registration with the state narcology registry.

When detox is needed

  • physical dependence: withdrawal symptoms develop when you try to stop using
  • regular use of alcohol or drugs over weeks and months
  • use of several substances at once, including sleeping pills and sedatives
  • signs of chronic intoxication: weakness, weight loss, poor sleep
  • preparation for alcohol “coding,” chemical protection or a rehab program
  • relapse after a period of sobriety with a return to daily use
  • wanting to stop using but being afraid of withdrawal symptoms

If heavy drinking has lasted more than two or three days, or there is shaking, vomiting, blood-pressure spikes or insomnia, you need a doctor rather than stopping alone. Phone advice is free. For seizures, confusion or hallucinations call 103 or 112.

What happens in the body and why medical detox is needed

Long-term use of psychoactive substances changes how the brain's neurotransmitter systems, the liver, the heart and the digestive tract work. The body operates in a new balance in which the substance has become part of it. Stopping suddenly upsets this balance, and withdrawal syndrome develops; its severity depends on the substance: with alcohol and sedatives, seizures and delirium are possible, while with opioids there is severe pain and autonomic disturbances.

Besides managing withdrawal, detox also aims to restore the body: correcting dehydration, electrolyte imbalances and vitamin deficiencies, and normalizing sleep and nutrition. Medical supervision makes it possible to detect complications and coexisting illnesses — hepatitis, pancreatitis, heart rhythm disorders and depression — in good time. A do-it-yourself “detox” with folk remedies and random pills does none of this and can be dangerous.

How detox works: stages of the program

Stage 1 — an initial consultation, which can be online: the doctor takes a medical history, assesses the risks and decides on the treatment format. Stage 2 — examination and tests: blood pressure, pulse, an ECG and lab tests as indicated. Stage 3 — active detox: IV therapy, medications to control withdrawal, vitamins and liver-protecting drugs. Stage 4 — stabilization: restoring sleep and appetite. Stage 5 — a plan for treating the dependence and a consultation with a psychotherapist.

Outpatient detox is contraindicated if there is a history of seizures or delirium, withdrawal from benzodiazepines or barbiturates, mixed substance use, severe heart, liver or kidney disease, psychotic symptoms, suicidal thoughts or pregnancy. In these cases, treatment is provided only in an inpatient unit, and if life is at risk, call 103 or 112.

How we help

01

IV therapy

Intravenous solutions restore fluid volume and electrolyte balance, improve kidney function and speed up the removal of metabolic waste products. The composition is chosen based on the examination and test results, taking into account blood pressure, heart and kidney function, and blood glucose. Drips are given daily during the acute phase and reduced as the patient's condition improves.

02

Controlling withdrawal

Medications from different groups are used to treat withdrawal, depending on the substance. For alcohol withdrawal, the mainstay is benzodiazepines prescribed by a doctor; for opioid withdrawal, symptomatic treatment is used. Benzodiazepine withdrawal is managed by gradually reducing the dose. All prescriptions are made only by the doctor, who adjusts them daily.

03

Restoring organs and body systems

B vitamins, especially thiamine, are prescribed to prevent neurological complications. Liver-protecting drugs and stomach protection are used when indicated. An important part of treatment is normalizing sleep and nutrition: without them, recovery takes longer and the risk of relapse increases. If coexisting illnesses are found, the relevant specialists are brought in.

04

Psychological support

A psychotherapist or psychologist starts working with the patient during detox itself: motivational interviewing, discussing fears and expectations, and planning the next steps. This increases the likelihood that the person will continue treatment after discharge. Relatives are offered a consultation on how to support their loved one without pressure.

Myths and facts

MythDetox cures addiction

FactDetox eliminates the physical symptoms of withdrawal but does not change behavior or cravings. The WHO emphasizes that without follow-up treatment, most people eventually go back to using the substance.

MythYou can “cleanse your body” with herbs and absorbents

FactAbsorbents and herbal teas do not control withdrawal and do not prevent seizures or delirium. Medical detox is based on monitoring vital signs and using proven treatment methods.

MythThe longer the detox, the better

FactThe length of detox depends on the patient's condition, not on a “more is better” principle. Taking sedatives for too long can create a new dependence, so the doctor ends this stage as soon as the patient is stable.

Questions and answers

Where is it better to go through detox — at home or in hospital?

It depends on the risk of complications. For uncomplicated alcohol withdrawal in a person without serious illnesses, home detox with doctor visits is possible. For severe withdrawal, a history of seizures, mixed substance use or withdrawal from sedatives, an inpatient unit is preferable.

How much does detox cost and what affects the price?

The cost depends on the format (home or inpatient), the duration, the range of tests and the treatments prescribed. The doctor gives the exact amount after a consultation and assessment. You can get preliminary information by calling Narcology 24, but the final plan is drawn up after an examination.

Can I work while going through detox?

During the acute phase of outpatient detox, rest is recommended: the medications can cause drowsiness, and the condition itself can affect concentration. You must not drive or operate dangerous machinery. Once stable, many people return to work while continuing outpatient treatment.

Does treatment have to be anonymous and without documents?

Anonymity is the patient's right. You can be treated without showing an ID card; in that case, no medical documents for your employer are issued. If you need them, treatment is registered in the usual way while still observing medical confidentiality.

What comes after detox?

The next stage is treatment of the dependence: psychotherapy, medication to support remission, alcohol coding or chemical protection when indicated, a rehab program and participation in mutual-help groups. The choice depends on the substance, the length of use and the patient's preferences.

What if the person is using and thinking about suicide?

Thoughts of death or self-harm are a reason to seek help immediately: call 103 or 112 and do not leave the person alone. Teenagers and young people can get anonymous support from the 150 helpline. Once the immediate danger has passed, a psychiatrist becomes involved in the treatment.

Where do doctors visit in Arkalyk and where are the branches?

Home visits cover all city districts and nearby settlements, 24/7. Appointments at two branches: 129 Altynsarina St., office 27, Arkalyk and 26 Gagarina St., Arkalyk. Phone in Arkalyk: +7 (700) 309-30-65.
