Beer alcoholism in Almaty

In short

Beer alcoholism is alcohol dependence syndrome in which a person regularly drinks large amounts of beer. In the ICD, it is the same alcohol dependence as with spirits, but with its own features: daily drinking, large volumes of fluid, and strain on the heart, kidneys and liver. Narcology 24 treats beer alcoholism anonymously: a consultation, detox if needed, a medical workup and psychotherapy.

What you should know

On beer-related calls, it is rarely the patient who calls us. Usually it is the wife: “He doesn’t drink vodka, only beer, but three or four liters every evening, and from the morning on weekends.” Over the phone, I can hear doubt in her voice: maybe this isn’t an illness at all? When I arrive at the apartment in Nauryzbay district, I see a man with swelling, high blood pressure, shortness of breath on the stairs and insomnia whenever he skips his evening bottle. This is a typical picture.

Beer is seen as a “light” drink, so dependence on it goes unnoticed for a long time. The person is convinced they are in control: they go to work, drive a car and don’t go on binges. But ask them to stop drinking for a week, and irritability, insomnia and anxiety appear. At the consultation, I explain that in terms of pure alcohol, a few liters of beer equal a bottle of vodka, and the body reacts accordingly. That is where treatment begins.

Signs of Beer Alcoholism

  • beer every day or almost every day, and an evening without it feels empty
  • the amount is gradually increasing: from one bottle to several liters
  • without beer it is hard to fall asleep, and irritability and anxiety appear
  • in the morning there is facial puffiness, a heavy head and an urge to “fix it” with a can of beer
  • the belly and weight are visibly growing, blood pressure is rising and shortness of breath appears
  • giving up beer for a few days leads to conflicts and relapses
  • the person is sure that beer isn’t really alcohol and that there’s no problem

If heavy drinking has lasted more than two or three days, or there is shaking, vomiting, blood-pressure spikes or insomnia, you need a doctor rather than stopping alone. Phone advice is free. For seizures, confusion or hallucinations call 103 or 112.

Why Beer Dependence Develops Unnoticed

Beer is easy to get and inexpensive, it is drunk with friends, at football games and after work, and all this is seen as normal. Its low strength creates an illusion of safety. But dependence is determined not by the strength of the drink but by the amount of ethanol and how regularly it is consumed. Daily drinking builds tolerance and a physical need, and the ritual of an “evening beer” becomes the main way to relax and relieve tension.

Large volumes of fluid and alcohol put a particular strain on the body. The heart and blood vessels suffer — cardiomyopathy, arrhythmias and high blood pressure can develop. The liver gradually accumulates fat, and alcohol-related liver disease develops. Metabolic and weight problems and hormonal changes are possible. Many of these consequences are partly reversible if the person stops in time and has a medical workup. For patients from Kaskelen or Talgar, we complete all the tests in a single visit.

How Beer Alcoholism Is Treated

We usually start with a consultation — in person or by video. The doctor asks how much and for how long the person has been drinking, whether there is withdrawal and what illnesses they have. If drinking is daily and heavy, stopping abruptly can cause pronounced withdrawal, so the first 1–3 days are spent under supervision, sometimes with an IV drip at home. This is followed by a medical workup, a discussion of medication support and regular sessions with a psychotherapist.

Home treatment is not appropriate if there are seizures, hallucinations, chest pain, severe shortness of breath, marked swelling, vomiting blood or signs of liver damage such as jaundice or dark urine. In these cases, hospital admission is needed, and if there is a threat to life, call 103 or 112. In the presence of obesity, diabetes or hypertension, treatment is coordinated with a cardiologist and an endocrinologist.

How we help

01

Stopping drinking safely

With daily consumption of large amounts of beer, quitting abruptly can cause tremor, sweating, a rapid heartbeat, insomnia and sometimes even seizures. The doctor assesses the risks and, if needed, carries out detox: detoxification IV solutions, B vitamins and correction of electrolytes. Sedatives are prescribed only by a doctor and under supervision.

02

Medical workup and restoring health

Blood tests with liver enzymes, glucose, lipids and electrolytes, an ECG and a liver ultrasound are ordered. Based on the results, the doctor gives advice on diet, daily routine and physical activity and, if needed, refers the person to a cardiologist or endocrinologist. Many markers improve noticeably after just a few months of sobriety.

03

Psychotherapy for habits and cravings

Beer dependence is closely tied to rituals: an evening in front of the TV, football, meeting up with friends. The psychotherapist helps identify these triggers and find replacements: new ways to relax, sports, hobbies, a different way of getting together. Cognitive behavioral therapy and motivational interviewing are used, along with family sessions if needed.

04

Medication support

If cravings are strong and the person can’t cope on their own, the doctor may suggest medications that reduce cravings, as well as alcohol “coding” (a treatment widely used in Kazakhstan and CIS countries) or blockers. These are used only after a medical workup, the required period of sobriety and written informed consent, as part of comprehensive treatment at Narcology 24 and with no promises of a lifelong effect.

Myths and facts

MythBeer isn’t really alcohol

FactBeer contains ethanol, and a few liters a day give the body as much alcohol as hard liquor. Beer dependence is diagnosed by the same ICD criteria and is treated as alcohol dependence.

MythBeer alcoholism isn’t as dangerous as vodka alcoholism

FactThe consequences are largely the same: diseases of the liver, heart, pancreas, nervous system and mental health. The large volumes of fluid put additional strain on the heart, kidneys and blood vessels and raise blood pressure.

MythSwitching to non-alcoholic beer will solve everything

FactFor some people this helps; for others, the taste and the ritual trigger cravings and a relapse. It is best to discuss this decision with a doctor and a psychotherapist, based on how the person reacts to such triggers.

Questions and answers

How much beer a day counts as alcoholism?

There is no single number. The diagnosis is based on the signs of dependence: loss of control, cravings, withdrawal and continued drinking despite harm. If you drink beer every day and can’t go a week without it without becoming irritable or losing sleep, it is worth seeing an addiction doctor.

Is an IV drip needed for beer alcoholism?

Not always. With moderate drinking, a consultation, a medical workup and psychotherapy are often enough. But if the person drinks heavily and daily, stopping can cause pronounced withdrawal, and then the doctor may suggest an IV drip and monitoring at home or in the inpatient unit.

Will a “beer belly” go away after quitting?

Often, weight and belly size gradually go down, especially if diet and physical activity are improved at the same time. But it isn’t only about appearance: the doctor will check the liver, heart and metabolism to assess the consequences and plan recovery.

How can I convince my husband that beer is a problem?

Arguing about words is pointless. It is better to talk about specific things: blood pressure, sleep, shortness of breath, conflicts. Suggest a health check or a talk with a doctor. A consultation for relatives will help you prepare for the conversation without a fight.

Can I get treatment without stopping work?

Yes. If there is no pronounced withdrawal, treatment is provided on an outpatient basis: consultations, a medical workup, psychotherapy and medication if needed. Sessions can be held in the evening or online so you don’t have to sit in traffic after work. A sick note isn’t necessary.

Will alcohol coding help with beer?

Alcohol coding can be part of treatment, but only after a medical workup, a period of sobriety and written consent. Without psychotherapy and a change in habits, the result is usually short-lived. The Narcology 24 doctor will go over all the options and help you choose the right one.
