Drug rehab in Almaty

In short

Drug rehab is a long stage of treatment after detox whose goal is lasting abstinence from drugs and the restoration of physical health, mental health, and social life. At Narcology 24, the program includes an inpatient or outpatient format, psychotherapy, treatment of co-occurring mental health disorders, and work with the family; it usually lasts 3 to 12 months. We start with a 24/7 doctor’s home visit in Almaty and detox.

What you should know

Told by the on-call doctor of our mobile team. Calls to people with drug addiction are more often at night and more severe. A mother calls: “My son hasn’t slept for three days, he’s in withdrawal and begging for money.” The dispatcher will ask which substance, how long he has been using, when he last used, and whether there have been overdoses, seizures, psychoses, HIV, or hepatitis, as well as what medications he takes. We do not ask where he gets the substances, and we do not report to the police — we need the medical picture in order to help safely.

In an apartment in the Turksib or Alatau district, I usually see an exhausted person and a family that has tried everything. We relieve the acute symptoms, but we are honest: addiction is not cured at home with a single IV drip. Detox is needed, often in the inpatient unit, followed by rehab — months, not days. If during the call the person is breathing poorly, does not regain consciousness, or their lips turn blue, it is an overdose — call 103 or 112 without waiting for our team.

When Rehab Is Needed

  • regular drug use and an inability to stop on one’s own
  • withdrawal — aches, insomnia, anxiety, pain — when trying to stop
  • repeated relapses after detox or treatment at home
  • a history of overdoses, ambulance calls, and psychotic episodes
  • loss of a job or studies, debts, conflicts with the law
  • infections and illnesses related to drug use, rapid decline in health
  • the person admits that their life has spun out of control

If two or three points apply, it is worth seeing a doctor. Phone advice is free and confidential. If life is at risk, call 103 or 112.

Why Drug Addiction Requires Long-Term Rehab

Drugs — opioids, stimulants, synthetic substances — profoundly change the way the reward and behavioral control systems work. After detox, these changes persist for months: cravings, mood swings, sleep disturbances, anhedonia. It is during this period that most relapses occur. The WHO and international guidelines regard drug addiction as a chronic relapsing disease that requires long-term treatment.

Beyond biology, addiction is sustained by a social circle in which drug use is considered normal, traumatic experiences, depression, anxiety disorders, ADHD, and social isolation. Rehab addresses all of these factors: it treats co-occurring disorders, teaches the skills of sober living, and helps rebuild relationships and find a new social circle. Without this, even high-quality detox has only a short-term effect.

The Path from the First Call to Rehab

At night: the home visit and stabilization — examination, oxygen saturation, blood pressure, pulse, neurological status, symptomatic treatment, and an IV drip when indicated. In the morning, transfer to the inpatient unit with the patient’s consent. Detox takes one to three weeks, during which lab tests and examinations are carried out, including tests for infections. Then comes a consultation with a psychiatrist and a psychotherapist and the choice of program: inpatient, outpatient, or a combination. The family receives separate consultations.

Rehab at home without detox is not possible. Inpatient care is mandatory in cases of polysubstance addiction, severe withdrawal, psychosis, a history of seizures, suicidal thoughts, or serious physical illness. The online format is suitable only for follow-up support after the main stage. In case of an overdose or slowed breathing, call 103 or 112. Treatment without consent is possible only by court order.

How we help

01

Detox

Carried out in the Narcology 24 inpatient unit under round-the-clock supervision. Detox solutions, vitamins, liver-protecting medications, and symptomatic therapy are used, and, if needed, medications prescribed only by a doctor. For opioid addiction, the use of opioid receptor antagonists (opioid blockade) may be discussed after detox — following an examination and with the patient’s consent.

02

Inpatient rehab

The patient lives at the clinic for several weeks to several months, in a sober environment with no access to substances. Every day includes individual and group psychotherapy, relapse prevention sessions, and work and physical activity. This format is suitable when drug use continues at home or in the person’s social circle and they need to step away from their usual environment for a while.

03

Outpatient program

After the inpatient stage, or when motivation is strong enough, the patient lives at home and attends sessions several times a week, some of which take place online. This helps them gradually return to studies and work. Regular meetings with a doctor and, with consent, drug tests help spot the risk of relapse in time and adjust the treatment plan.

04

Dual diagnosis treatment and work with the family

Many patients have depression, anxiety or psychotic disorders, or the aftermath of trauma alongside their addiction. A psychiatrist selects treatment that carries no risk of a new dependence. In parallel, a psychotherapist works with the family: how to support without controlling and how to respond to a relapse. Family sessions can be held online.

Myths and facts

MythDrug addiction cannot be cured

FactDrug addiction is a chronic disease, but with long-term treatment many people achieve stable remission and return to a normal life. The length of the program and the support after it are decisive.

MythIt’s enough to “cleanse the blood” with an IV drip

FactAn IV drip relieves intoxication and eases withdrawal, but it does not affect cravings or the causes of addiction. Without rehab, most patients return to drug use within the first months after detox.

MythA person can be sent to rehab by force

FactRehab at Narcology 24 is provided only on a voluntary basis. Involuntary treatment is possible exclusively by court order, in the manner established by the law of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Motivation can be developed, including through work with the family.

Questions and answers

How long does drug rehab take?

Detox usually takes one to three weeks, and rehab from three months to a year, depending on the substance, how long the person has been using, and co-occurring disorders. After the main program, follow-up support is recommended. The doctor draws up an exact plan after the examination.

Will you report to the police?

No. We are a medical organization; treatment is provided anonymously, with no entry in the state dispensary registry. Medical confidentiality is protected by the Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan “On Public Health and the Healthcare System.” Information is disclosed only in cases expressly provided for by law.

Can we visit the patient in the inpatient unit?

Yes, visits are possible by arrangement with the attending doctor and psychotherapist, usually after the first stage of adjustment. Meetings with the family are an important part of the program, but they are planned so as to support treatment rather than disrupt it. For patients from Talgar and Kaskelen, some family sessions are held online.

What should we do if he refuses treatment?

Do not stop trying, but change your approach: stop paying off debts and the consequences of drug use, and talk calmly when he is sober. Contact the clinic’s psychotherapist for relatives — they will help you prepare for the conversation and choose the right moment.

Does online rehab help?

The online format is suitable for follow-up support after the inpatient stage, for sessions with a psychotherapist, and for consultations with relatives. Starting rehab online while actively using drugs is unsafe: detox and an in-person examination are needed.

What should we do in case of a relapse after rehab?

A relapse is a reason to return to treatment quickly, not a sign of failure. Call the doctor right away: they will assess the person’s condition and suggest detox or a more intensive program. Remember that after a break, tolerance is lower and the risk of overdose is especially high — if breathing slows, call 103.
