What you should know
The morning after a corporate party, a wedding or a holiday is the most common time for calls asking for a hangover IV drip. Both the people themselves and their loved ones call: “My head is splitting, I keep throwing up, and I have to be at work in three hours.” The dispatcher asks how much and when the person drank, whether it was one evening or several days in a row, whether there is heart, blood pressure or stomach disease, and whether any medications are being taken. A hangover after one evening and coming off a multi-day binge are different situations, and the doctor needs to know which one they are facing.
After New Year and Nauryz, the on-call team has a packed schedule: from early morning, calls come in from all over the city — from the new apartment blocks of the Nauryzbay district to the older buildings of the Medeu district. I arrive and see a pale person with parched lips; blood pressure may be high or low. I measure vital signs, ask how they feel, and only then decide exactly what to give. Usually the nausea goes away after 40–60 minutes, and by the end of the procedure the head feels better.
When to Call a Doctor for a Hangover IV Drip
- repeated vomiting that makes it impossible to keep down even water
- a severe headache that ordinary painkillers do not relieve
- marked weakness, dizziness and a pounding heart in the morning
- dry mouth, infrequent urination, dark urine
- shaking hands, sweating and anxiety after the night before
- the hangover lasts more than 24 hours and does not go away on its own
- you have an important day ahead, but you feel too unwell to get up
If heavy drinking has lasted more than two or three days, or there is shaking, vomiting, blood-pressure spikes or insomnia, you need a doctor rather than stopping alone. Phone advice is free. For seizures, confusion or hallucinations call 103 or 112.
Why a Hangover Can Be So Severe
Alcohol makes the kidneys excrete more fluid, irritates the stomach lining, disrupts sleep and affects blood sugar. Its breakdown products, above all acetaldehyde, cause headache, nausea and a rapid heartbeat. With age, with chronic illnesses and when different drinks are mixed, tolerance drops, and a hangover that cleared up by lunchtime at twenty can last a whole day at forty.
It is important to tell a hangover apart from withdrawal. If a person has been drinking for several days in a row, shakes in the morning and only feels “relief” after another drink, that is already a sign of addiction, and one IV drip will not be enough. The doctor will definitely ask about this during the visit. An honest answer helps choose the right approach and notice in time that the problem goes deeper than an ordinary holiday evening.
How a Hangover IV Drip at Home Works
You call, the dispatcher asks a few questions and gives an arrival time that takes into account your district and traffic. If you wish, the doctor can have a short video call to assess the condition in advance. On site: an examination, blood pressure, pulse, oxygen saturation and, if necessary, blood sugar. Then consent, a catheter and the IV drip: fluids for rehydration, B vitamins and, when indicated, anti-nausea drugs and medications to protect the stomach. After the procedure, the doctor observes for 15–20 minutes and gives recommendations for the rest of the day.
A home IV drip is not given if the person is unconscious or has seizures, chest pain, severe abdominal pain, vomiting of blood or “coffee grounds,” signs of a head injury after a fall, or confusion. These are reasons to call 103 or 112 right away. Caution is needed with heart disease, kidney disease and diabetes — the doctor takes this into account when choosing the volume and composition.
How we help
Fluid replacement
The main reason you feel so bad with a hangover is dehydration and the loss of electrolytes. Saline solutions quickly restore normal fluid volume and reduce dizziness and weakness. The volume is calculated according to body weight and the state of the cardiovascular system; in older people and those with heart disease, the doctor gives fluids more slowly and in smaller amounts.
Vitamins and metabolic support
Alcohol depletes B vitamin stores and disrupts glucose metabolism. The vitamins in the IV drip support the nervous system, while glucose-containing solutions help with weakness and tremor. The doctor chooses their combination and sequence so as not to cause harm — for example, when indicated, thiamine is given first.
Relieving nausea and pain
For marked vomiting, the doctor gives anti-nausea medications; for stomach irritation, medications that reduce acidity. Painkillers are used with caution: some irritate the stomach, others put a strain on the liver, so the choice depends on what the person has already taken. The goal is to ease the condition without creating new risks.
Recommendations for the day
After the IV drip, the doctor leaves a simple plan: drink water in small sips, eat light food, sleep, and avoid alcohol and large amounts of coffee. If hangovers happen often, I always offer to calmly discuss the person’s relationship with alcohol — sometimes this conversation turns out to be more useful than the drip itself. This matters.
Myths and facts
MythThe best hangover cure is “hair of the dog”
FactAnother drink relieves the symptoms for a short while but prolongs intoxication and dehydration. Regularly “treating” a hangover with alcohol is one of the paths toward developing addiction and binge drinking, which is why doctors do not recommend it.
MythA hangover IV drip is bad for your health
FactAn IV drip given by a doctor after an examination is a safe procedure. Risks arise when it is given without assessing the person’s condition, in an excessive volume, or to people with contraindications. That is why we always start with an examination.
MythIf the IV drip helped, there is no problem
FactA hangover after an occasional celebration is one thing; needing an IV drip every weekend is another. Frequent severe hangovers are a reason to see an addiction doctor and check whether a dependence is developing.

Questions and answers
How soon will I feel better after the IV drip?
Usually the nausea goes away within the first hour, and headache and weakness ease by the end of the procedure. Full recovery takes until the evening, and many people find that sleeping after the drip helps. If there is no improvement or things get worse, the doctor reconsiders the approach and, if necessary, suggests inpatient care.
Can I go to work after the IV drip?
Many people feel well enough to do light work. But you should not drive that day: alcohol may still be in your blood, and some of the medications reduce concentration. It is better to take a taxi or ask someone close to you for a ride.
Will you come to a hotel or an office?
Yes, a Narcology 24 doctor comes to hotels, offices and rented apartments in any district of Almaty. It is important to have a place where the person can lie down for 1.5–2 hours. We arrive without any identifying markings, and only you and the doctor know the purpose of the visit.
Which is better: an IV drip or pills?
For a mild hangover, water, rest and food are often enough. An IV drip is justified with vomiting, marked weakness and dehydration, when pills and fluids simply are not absorbed. The doctor will help you choose and will not suggest an IV drip if it is not needed.
How long will it take the doctor to get here?
It depends on the district and the time of day. On mornings after holidays demand is high, and during rush hour the drive from the lower part of the city to the upper part takes longer. The dispatcher gives an estimated time right away so you can plan your day, and lets you know if the team is delayed.
Is it anonymous?
Yes. We do not require documents for an anonymous house call, do not put anyone on the registry and do not inform employers about the visit. Information about the call is protected by medical confidentiality under the Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan “On Public Health and the Healthcare System,” with exceptions only as provided by law.
