Confidential addiction treatment in Astana

In short

Anonymous treatment for alcoholism and drug addiction is a full course of care for dependence without registration with the state dispensary and without sharing data with third parties. It includes detox, medication support, psychotherapy, and follow-up care. At Narcology 24, treatment takes place at home, in an inpatient unit, or on an outpatient basis, and lasts from several days to several months. The family receives support at every stage and understands what the doctors are doing and why.

What you should know

For many families, the deciding question is not “to treat or not to treat” but “what will happen if someone finds out.” A father fears for his son’s career, a wife for her husband’s reputation, adult children for their elderly mother’s standing. Anonymous treatment lets you start helping the person without putting their future at risk. It is not a “secret” or “lightweight” option — it is regular medical treatment following clinical protocols, simply with securely protected data.

Astana has many people who moved for work and are afraid of losing their jobs, and for them anonymity is especially important. Loved ones also need to know that their involvement will not become known to neighbors or colleagues. At Narcology 24, doctors arrive without identifying markings, documents are prepared without stating the diagnosis in any public paperwork, and relatives discuss the course of treatment only with the attending physician, without intermediaries or unnecessary witnesses.

Signs It Is Time to Move On to Treatment

  • drinking or drug use has become regular, and attempts to cut down end in relapse
  • without alcohol or the substance, shaking, insomnia, anxiety, and sweating appear
  • the person spends more and more money and time on drinking or using
  • health problems have appeared: liver, blood pressure, stomach, heart
  • there are constant arguments in the family, and the children have become withdrawn or aggressive
  • the person says they are tired of it but do not know how to stop
  • there have been dangerous episodes: drunk driving, injuries, memory blackouts

If two or three points apply, it is worth seeing a doctor. Phone advice is free and confidential. If life is at risk, call 103 or 112.

What the Family Needs to Know About Anonymity

Anonymous treatment is based on everyone’s right to medical confidentiality, established in the Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan “On Public Health and the Healthcare System.” With paid anonymous care, the patient is not placed on the state dispensary registry, and information about them is not passed on to employers, the military enlistment office, or educational institutions. Exceptions to medical confidentiality are provided for only by law — for example, at the request of a court or an investigation.

Loved ones should also understand the other side: the doctor is obliged to keep confidentiality from them, too. If the patient is an adult and has not given consent, the addiction specialist will not retell the details of their conversations. However, the family can receive a separate consultation about their own questions and how to support the person. This protects the trust between patient and doctor, without which treatment is rarely successful.

How Anonymous Treatment Works, Step by Step

It usually all starts with a phone call or an online consultation with a relative. The doctor assesses the situation and suggests a format: a home visit to relieve the acute condition, hospital admission, or outpatient treatment. Then detox and tests are carried out, and maintenance therapy and psychotherapy are selected. At every stage, the family knows what is happening and receives recommendations on how to behave at home.

Home treatment is not possible in cases of severe withdrawal with a history of seizures, delirium tremens, psychosis, serious heart or liver disease, decompensated diabetes, or poisoning with unknown substances. In such cases, inpatient care is needed. If the condition is life-threatening — loss of consciousness, delusions, chest pain, vomiting blood — call 103 or 112 immediately.

How we help

01

Detox

The first stage is to clear the breakdown products of alcohol or the substance and relieve withdrawal symptoms. Detoxifying IV solutions, B vitamins, liver-protecting medications, and medications for sleep and anxiety reduction are used as prescribed by the doctor. Detox is carried out at home or in an inpatient unit depending on severity. It is the beginning of treatment, not the treatment itself, and it is important for the family to understand this.

02

Medication support

After detox, the doctor may offer medications that reduce cravings or block the effect of the substance — for example, opioid receptor antagonists. Alcohol “coding” (a treatment widely used in Kazakhstan and CIS countries) and blockades are possible only after tests, the required period of sobriety, and the person’s own written consent. This is part of a comprehensive program, not a magic pill that will solve everything forever.

03

Addiction psychotherapy

A psychotherapist helps the person understand what triggers their drinking or drug use and learn to cope with cravings and stress without alcohol or the substance. Cognitive behavioral approaches, motivational interviewing, and group work are used. Without psychotherapy, the risk of relapse is much higher, which is why Narcology 24 includes it in every program.

04

Working with the family

Relatives take part in separate sessions: they learn to set boundaries, stop rescuing and controlling, and work out how to respond to a relapse. The family changes together with the patient, and this greatly increases the chances of long-term sobriety. Loved ones need support themselves, too — years of living alongside addiction leave their mark.

Myths and facts

MythAnonymous treatment is worse than regular treatment

FactAnonymity is a way of handling data, not a level of care. The same methods are used as those recommended by clinical protocols and international guidelines. The only difference is that the patient is not registered and their data are protected.

MythYou can get treated once and forget about it

FactAddiction is a chronic disease, and even after a successful course, support is needed: psychotherapy, monitoring, work with the family. A relapse does not mean failure; it is a signal to adjust the plan. An honest approach is not to promise “forever” but to build long-term sobriety.

MythIf the person does not want it, treatment is pointless

FactMotivation often appears along the way: after detox, after a first conversation with a doctor, after the family changes its behavior. Compulsory treatment is possible only by court decision, but gentle motivational work with loved ones often leads to voluntary consent.

Where to get help

In astana you can get help at home, at one of our two branches (6 Auezova St., office 37, Astana, 176 Imanova St., Astana) or online if you need a consultation rather than a procedure. The dispatcher answers 24/7 and will tell you straight away which option is safest.

Confidential and private

Information about your request, diagnosis and treatment is protected by medical confidentiality under the Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan “On Public Health and the Healthcare System”. We do not share it with employers, schools, the police or neighbours; the only exceptions are those expressly set by law. A first name is enough to call us, and paid confidential treatment does not mean a registry entry.

Questions and answers

Will my employer find out about the treatment?

No. The clinic does not pass information on to employers and does not issue documents with a diagnosis without the patient’s consent. If sick leave is needed, the doctor will explain in advance how it is issued and what it states. With anonymous treatment, the person decides for themselves what to tell and to whom.

Can treatment be done at home so the neighbors do not find out?

Yes, doctors travel to any district of Astana without identifying markings, and an IV drip can be given at home. But home treatment is not suitable for everyone: a serious condition requires inpatient care. The doctor will assess the risks and honestly tell you which format is safe in your case.

How long does anonymous treatment take?

Detox takes from one to several days. The inpatient stage usually lasts from several days to several weeks. A full program with psychotherapy and follow-up care can last for months. The timeline depends on the substance, how long the person has been using, their health, and the family’s willingness to take part.

What should I do if my husband agreed and then changed his mind?

This is a common situation, and you should not see it as a defeat. Stay calm, do not make a scene, and agree to return to the conversation later. You can suggest at least a consultation or an online meeting with a doctor. The addiction specialist will advise you on how to keep motivation going without pressuring the person.

Can relatives find out how the treatment is going?

If the patient gives consent, the doctor discusses the plan and progress with loved ones. Without an adult patient’s consent, details are not disclosed. In any case, the family can receive consultations on their own questions: how to behave, how to help, how to respond to difficulties.

Are teenagers treated anonymously?

Minors are treated with the involvement of their legal representatives, as the law requires. Their data are still protected by medical confidentiality and are not passed on to the school. If a teenager is in danger or has suicidal thoughts, call 103 or 112, as well as the 150 helpline.
