Alcohol rehab in Astana

In short

Alcohol addiction rehab is a recovery program after detox that teaches a person to live without alcohol: psychotherapy, group work, changing habits, relapse prevention, and family support. At Narcology 24, an addiction doctor and a psychotherapist put together an inpatient, outpatient, or online program, consult relatives in Astana, and help prepare a loved one for treatment; the core course lasts from 1 to 6 months.

What you should know

Many families go through the same cycle: detox after a binge, a week of sobriety, promises, and then another relapse. An IV drip relieves the poisoning but does not treat the addiction. Rehab is needed so the person can understand why they drink, learn to cope with stress, cravings, and emotions without alcohol, and build a new life. For relatives it is an important stage too: you learn not to rescue or control, but to support.

In Astana, many people live at an intense pace: rotational shift work or long hours, business trips, corporate parties, and a long winter when people go out less. That is why we offer different formats: residential rehab, a day program, or evening online sessions for those who cannot take time off work. Relatives can start with a consultation even if their loved one doesn’t agree yet, and plan the conversation together with a specialist.

When it’s time for the family to consider rehab

  • after detox from a binge, sobriety lasts only a few days or weeks
  • promises to quit but drinks again under stress, on weekends, or after payday
  • alcohol “coding” (a treatment widely used in Kazakhstan and CIS countries) or medications have been tried but didn’t help without addressing the causes
  • alcohol is destroying their work, health, finances, and relationships with the children
  • when sober, is irritable, anxious, and doesn’t know what to do with themselves
  • hides drinking, drinks alone, drinks in the morning to relieve a hangover
  • you, as a loved one, are at your limit and don’t know what else can be done

If two or three points apply, it is worth seeing a doctor. Phone advice is free and confidential. If life is at risk, call 103 or 112.

Why rehab is needed if the binge has already been stopped

Alcohol dependence (F10.2 in ICD-10) is a chronic disease that changes how the brain’s reward and control systems work. Detox removes the acute effects, but the cravings, habits, and ways of coping with emotions remain. Without rehab, the risk of relapse in the first months is very high. International guidelines, including NICE, recommend mandatory psychosocial support after detox.

Behind drinking there is often stress, trauma, depression, loneliness, relationship problems, or a culture of “having a drink to relax.” Rehab works with all of these layers. The family aspect matters too: if everything at home stays the same, it is hard for the person to stay sober. That is why we always invite relatives to consultations and family sessions during the program.

How rehab works: stages for the patient and the family

It starts with a consultation for the family or the patient, in person or by video. If the person is on a binge, detox comes first: a home visit from an addiction doctor in Astana or inpatient care. Next, the doctor and psychotherapist assess the person’s condition and choose the format: a residential program, a day program, or outpatient care with online sessions. The program includes individual and group therapy, relapse prevention training, family work, and a discharge plan.

Rehab cannot be started during a binge: safe detox comes first. The inpatient format is mandatory for severe withdrawal, a history of delirium, seizures, serious liver or heart disease, and depression with suicidal thoughts. Delirium tremens, seizures, or vomiting blood — call 103 or 112 immediately. The online format works well for follow-up but does not replace a doctor’s examination when complications arise.

How we help

01

Individual psychotherapy

The psychotherapist helps the person understand the reasons behind their drinking, cope with guilt and shame, and learn to recognize the early signs of cravings. Cognitive behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing, and trauma-focused work are used. The goal is not only to stop drinking but also to find solid ground in a sober life: meaning, relationships, and work.

02

Group therapy

In a group, the person sees that they are not alone and receives feedback from people with similar experiences. Triggers, relapses, relationships, and ways of coping with stress are discussed. Groups are led by a specialist, and the atmosphere is respectful and safe. Many participants say it was the group that helped them take off the mask and honestly face their situation.

03

Medication support

The doctor may prescribe medications that reduce cravings or help maintain sobriety, as well as treatment for co-occurring depression, anxiety, or insomnia. “Coding” and blockade treatments are used only after an examination, the required period of sobriety, and written informed consent, as part of comprehensive treatment, with no promises of “forever.”

04

Family program

Relatives attend consultations and family sessions: they learn to support sobriety without controlling every step, discuss house rules, and rebuild trust. We help the family prepare for their loved one’s return from inpatient care and understand how to respond to a possible relapse, so as not to slip back into old patterns.

Myths and facts

MythAn IV drip — and they’re cured

FactAn IV drip relieves intoxication but does not change habits, thoughts, or ways of coping with stress. Without rehab and psychotherapy, most people return to alcohol within the first few months.

MythRehab means isolation and a harsh regime

FactModern rehab respects the patient’s rights, is voluntary, and can be outpatient or online. The person stays in touch with their family, and in outpatient programs they keep working.

MythIf they relapsed, rehab didn’t work

FactRelapse is a common part of recovery from a chronic illness. What matters is to quickly return to the program, figure out the causes, and adjust the plan. Many people achieve lasting sobriety only after more than one attempt.

Questions and answers

How do I convince my husband to go to rehab?

The best time is right after an unpleasant consequence, when the person is sober and upset about it themselves. Talk about specific facts and your own feelings, and offer a concrete option: “I’ve booked a consultation — will you come with me?” The specialists at Narcology 24 will help you plan the conversation during a family consultation.

Can I go through rehab without leaving my job?

Yes. Outpatient programs and evening online sessions suit people with a packed work schedule. However, with severe addiction, frequent relapses, or a lack of support at home, the inpatient format offers better chances. The format is chosen after the doctor’s assessment.

How long does rehab last?

Inpatient programs usually last from 28 days to several months, outpatient programs 3–6 months. After the core course, aftercare support for up to a year is recommended: sessions with a psychotherapist and groups. The timeline is individual and depends on the severity of the addiction.

Who will find out about the treatment?

Narcology 24 works anonymously, without registration on the state dispensary registry. All information is protected by medical confidentiality under the Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan “On Public Health and the Healthcare System”. Employers and other parties receive no information, except in cases expressly provided for by law.

Can someone be admitted to rehab without their consent?

No, the clinic does not admit people against their will. Rehab is effective when the person is at least partly willing to take part. In the Republic of Kazakhstan, involuntary treatment is possible only by court decision, following the established procedure. Our task is to help the family motivate their loved one, not to force them.

What should the family do when the person comes home?

Keep a calm, supportive tone, remove alcohol from the home, and don’t carry out checks without an agreement. Help them stick to the plan: sessions, groups, daily routine. Discuss in advance what to do if signs of relapse appear. And don’t forget about yourself: support for relatives continues after discharge too.
